Mayor says city can accomplish much in ‘10
Paraphrasing a quote from President John F. Kennedy, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly insists the city must plan for future growth, not stand idly by.
“We need to exercise vision and hopefully get support from council for things we should do and need to do,” Jolly said.
In other words, Jolly thinks the city can accomplish much during 2010 despite tough economic times.
Atop his priority list is the completion of the old post office renovation project, which will transform the vacant building into the city’s new visual arts and visitors center. This fall, city leaders hired SYS Contractors to complete the final phase of the post office project, which includes the general renovation of the building.
Jolly also wants council to renew its efforts to revitalize the city’s downtown area by aggressively seeking grants to re-do some of the building facades and adopting regulations to maintain the buildings.
Improving the fledgling farmer’s market by adding a permanant shelter area and restroom facilities is another priority for Jolly this year.
His aggressive to-do list also includes expansion of the city’s beautification program and infrastructure upgrades to some of the city’s neighborhoods.
Jolly said the city can achieve its lofty goals while continuing to wisely spend the taxpayers’ money.
“We think we’re good stewards of the taxpayers’ money,” the mayor said. “We aren’t extravagant, but we want to continue to make our community viable and to enhance the cultural opportunities for not only our citizens but those who live in the surrounding area.”
