Pancakes, anyone?

Pancakes and coffee could become the new way for Gaffney High basketball fans to get ready for the playoffs.
The Kiwanis Club is breaking with tradition and has scheduled its annual pancake supper for Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m. in the Gaffney High cafeteria. The event will occur before Gaffney’s final home basketball game against Northwestern.
This will be the first time in 47 years the club has held its major fundraising event during the basketball season. Previous events took place during the Gaffney High football season.
The Kiwanis Club held its most recent pancake supper right before Halloween in 2008 near the end of Gaffney High’s first season in its new football stadium. A lack of parking made it difficult for people to get through the supper lines in a timely manner.
“We found with the restricted parking around the stadium people couldn’t get into the pancake supper without parking a mile away,” Kiwanis Club President Rhett Hasell said. “Our turnout was down from what we had seen in the past. We thought it would better for everyone if we moved the pancake supper to the winter, especially since high school basketball games have become so popular.”
While the time of year has changed, the Kiwanis Club isn’t changing much about the actual event.
Tickets are $5 in advance and $5.50 at the door. The meal consists of pancakes and sausage served with coffee, milk or ice tea.
The Kiwanis Club is a national service organization which provides a way for local residents to be involved in community service. The club annually sponsors the Terrific Kids awards program to recognize outstanding elementary school students.
The club supports local charities such as Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Senior Centers of Cherokee County and the Cherokee Children’s Home.
Tickets can be purchased in advance from Gaffney Kiwanis club members and are also available at Ace Hardware/Buford Street Pharmacy or Brown’s Meat Market.
