Gaffney High freshman Thomas Diones posted one of his team's few victories in the opening round state duals at South Pointe on Tuesday. Unfortunately for the Gaffney High wrestling team, the rematch with South Pointe was another mismatch.

The teams met last year in the opening round of the state duals, with South Pointe earning a 55-15 victory.

This time, the match was even more one-sided, 60-19.

With two matches already on the win colum for the Indians due to South Pointe forfeits, Gaffney wrestling coach Thomas Voelker had a good feeling about the matchup.

“There was no reason why it shouldn’t have been closer,” Voelker said.

But there were some bright spots for the Indians. Freshman Thomas Diones continues to impress with a decision victory at 152 lbs.

Randy Hopson, at 145 lbs., was the only other Indian to record a victory.

Blake Phillips and Jared Barnhill won by forfeit.

Voelker said Daniel Ruppe and Nick Mabry also wrestled well.

South Pointe will meet York in a second-round matchup on Monday.

The Indians participated in the Region III-4A tournament at Fort Mill on Thursday, but the results were complete at press time.
