CHAPS hosts ‘Love Letters’ dinner theatre performances

2010-02-08 / LifeStyles

Just in time for Valentine's Day, the Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society, in conjunction with chc associates casting and services, will host a special CHAPS’s fundraising event.

Thursday, Feb. 11, through Sunday, Feb. 14, CHAPS and chc associates will host a rare dinner theatre show in Cherokee County with their presentation of A.R. Gurney’s "Love Letters."

"Love Letters" may have been written and critically acclaimed as one of the finest and best five American plays of the 1980s, but it has a timeless social commentary relative to our times today.

From their first scrawled valentines of childhood, to the last guilty goodbyes, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III’s letters envelope us in a unique nostalgia. While the images they create bring back youth’s universal innocence, fears and fancies, they further reveal themselves, their goals and their dreams, in a “love affair” that takes them from grade school through middle age. And as they ponder opportunity lost and love squandered, we see the very essence of their lifelong relationship – all in the letters that were at its very root.

Two of Gaffney’s veteran professional artists will share “Love Letters" – Phyllis Arial Ker Randolph and Christopher H. Cline. Randolph has been working professionally as a director/designer/ actor/educator since the early 1970s and most recently training and teaching Cherokee County’s younger performers in the WINGS Drama Program along with appearances regionally. Cline brings over 30 years of professional experience in the feature film, television and stage arenas, from producingwriting and directing to acting and designing.

Randolph and Cline are both Gaffney Little Theatre and Limestone College stage veterans.

As an additional treat, some local musicians and educators are being contacted to provide entertainment during the refreshment and dinner hour.

The dinner theatre begins Thursday and runs through Sunday, Feb. 14. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin with refreshments at 6:30, dinner at 7 and curtain at 8. Desserts will be served at intermission. Tickets for these two nights are $35 a couple and $20 for singles.

Saturday’s special Valentine evening for couples will begin at the same times with tickets $50 per couple and $25 for singles; special additional details will be added for the dinner and ambiance.

Sunday’s matinee performance will be a dessert and beverage only event beginning at 2 p.m. and curtain at 3, with reduced tickets set at $25 per couple and $15 per single.

A limited number of preferred seating tables for six are available for $250 and tables for four, $175. Seating is limited for each date and requires advance reservations with pre-payment which guarantees seating. Call CHAPS at 864- 489-3988 to make arrangements.
