Former Gaffney High standout Donald Sims scored 29 points to lead Appalachian State to an 89-77 win over rival Western Carolina Saturday night.
Gaffney Middle downs rivals
Gaffney Middle defeated Granard in the first round of the Upstate Seven tournament Saturday 51-25.
Larry Phillips led the Chiefs with 19 points while Teheran Leach scored 13 and Jalen Sims scored 11.
Devin Littlejohn and Calvin Leach played well defensively. Gaffney Middle will play Thomas Jefferson in the second round on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The tournament is being held at Ewing Middle School.
Evans' 3-pointer lifts Saints to win
Tyron Evans' three-point basket with only seconds left on the clock lifted the Limestone College men's basketball team to a 91-90 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday night at the Timken Center.
Limestone improves to 12-7 overall and 8-6 in the conference. The Falcons fall to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in the league.
Limestone's Danny Friend scored a game-high 31 points for the Saints. He also recorded 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Jarrell Douglass had 18 points on 9-9 field-goal shooting.
Gaffney freshmen improve to 4-0
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—The Limestone College baseball team recorded a win and a loss at the Flagler Challenge on Saturday.
The Saints defeated Flagler College 11-2, but went on to lose to the University of Alabama at Huntsville, 9-8.
Gaffney's Brock White got the win against Flagler. Another former Indian, Cameron Culp, pitched in a game with University of Alabama-Huntsville.
Saints lose swim meet
The Saints' men's swim team lost a hard fought battle with the Savannah College of Art and Design on Saturday, 146-114, at the Timken Aquatic Center.
Limestone had several strong performances. Gilles Gutnecht finished first in the 200-yard freestyle. Blake Schaeffer won the 1000 freestyle.
Lance Maxwell took first in the 50 freestyle and Nikolaus Thomas won the 200 backstroke. The Saints will be back in action in Charlotte, N.C., on February 17-20 at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships.
