Gaffney guard Josh Corry had 18 points in the Indians' win over Fort Mill on Friday. Gaffney returns to action today against visiting York. The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets didn’t make as many three-pointers as they normally do. That was good news for the Gaffney Indians, who got 19 points from Dershawn Dawkins and 18 from Josh Corry to trip up the homestanding Yellow Jackets, 71-66, on Friday.

The win avenges the Indians’ lone region loss. In that game, the Yellow Jackets made nine threes in a four-point win. This time, Fort Mill hit just two three-pointers.

“It was a tough, hard win,” Gaffney coach Mark Huff said.

Gaffney sits atop the region at 6-1. Clover and Fort Mill are tied for second at 5-3.

Corry got the Indians off to a good start, hitting three 3s in the first quarter. Corry’s hot shooting helped the Indians build a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“The good start was big,” Huff said. “That set the tone for the game.”

In contrast to Corry’s hot start, Mark Blackmon, who had 27 points in Fort Mill’s win over Gaffney, was blanked in the first half.

Huff said the Indians did a good job of keeping a defender near Blackmon at all times. Dominique Byers, Willie Smith and Zavonte Shands had the responsibility of guarding the Fort Mill sharpshooter.

Fort Mill had a spurt to cut the deficit to 52-50 but Gaffney answered with a 6-0 run. The Indians put the game away at the foul line, where Corry was 2 of 2 and Dawkins went 5 for 5. Dawkins scored 17 of his points in the second half.

Gaffney hosts York today in a remake of a game wiped out by snow and ice on Jan. 29. The Indians will have less than 24 hours before traveling to Clover for a game on Tuesday.
