The Gaffney High baseball team showed its inexperience in a tough 5-4 season-opening loss at home to rival Dorman on Tuesday.

The Indians blew an early 3- run lead.

“Everything we are doing wrong is very correctable,” Gaffney coach Jeff Osment said. “We just have to get some experience and just commit to working hard.”

Newcomer Mike Wood was the bright spot for the Indians, with a solo home run and two dazzling defensive plays in centerfield.

Nick Smiley had a solid outing for the Indians, allowing six hits in seven innings.

“Nick threw the ball well for us,” Osment said.

The Cavaliers tied the game at 4 with a run in the fifth and went ahead for good with a run in the sixth.

Dorman went on top 1-0 in the first on a fielding and throwing error on the same play by the Indians.

Wood tied the game with a solo shot in the third before Joey Copeland’s infield single scored a run in the fourth inning.

A throwing error on Copeland’s hit brought in another run and Grayson Goforth singled home a run to give Gaffney a 4-1 lead.
