Wright’s wild and wonderful weekend

After scoring two points in the state championship basketball game Friday, sophomore Michael Wright pitched four solid innings on Saturday for the Gaffney High baseball team. And you thought you had a hectic weekend?

Try, Michael Wright’s on for size.

Less than 24 hours after helping the Gaffney boys basketball team to a state championship Friday night at the Colonial Life Center in Columbia, Wright put on his baseball uniform and pitched four innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win Saturday afternoon against Mid-Carolina in the Red Bank Invitational in nearby Lexington.

Whew!

Naturally, Wright accomplished the feat without much sleep.

“It was really hard to sleep,” the sophomore said.

The sleepless night might have been as much a result of the fast food he chowed down on after the game as the excitement of winning a state title.

Wright and his family stayed in the same hotel as the baseball team Friday night. So, when he was awakened by his alarm clock at 7 a.m., he grabbed a quick breakfast and joined his teammates on the bus for the short trip to White Knoll High School in Lexington.

Ironically, Wright said he didn’t see any of his baseball teammates after the basketball game but they were quick to give a congratulatory high five Saturday morning.

Because of his commitment to the basketball, Wright never practiced with the baseball team.

He did, however, long toss with his brother, Bubba, during a recent afternoon. But he never faced live batters.

Wright said the break from baseball actually helped his arm recover from an injury.

“I was obviously rested and my arm felt good,” he said. “I had some arm trouble over the summer and the rest helped me out a lot.”

Wright admitted Saturday’s baseball game was a lot less exciting than the environment Friday night at the Colonial Life Center.

“It was slow paced and there was hardly a crowd,” he said.

In addition to his impressive pitching performance, Wright had a big weekend with the bat, doubling against Mid-Carolina and having a pair of hits against J.L. Mann.

“The weekend was a challenge,” said Wright, a sophomore. “I like facing challenges. I’m a competitive person. What I needed was somebody to challenge me.”
