College Drive project ahead of schedule
Motorists approaching Limestone College are greeted with these signs and detours.
Here’s some good news for motorists who travel near Limestone College — renovations to a section of College Drive is ahead of schedule.
The contractor has completed installing storm drains and is ready to begin work on the curbing and sidewalk, said Cherokee County Assistant Administrator Holland Belue, who visits the work site daily.
According to the contract, Sossamon Construction must complete the $112,438 project by May 1. But, Belue said, if the the contractor keeps up the present pace, the project will be finished before the deadline.
Motorists have been rerouted to avoid the intersection at the entrance to the college.
The enhancement project will correct the drainage problems at College Drive and Griffin Street. Plans also call for stamped asphalt to be poured to match the brickwork of the column at the college entrance. The textured surface also serves as a traffic control measure.
The crepe myrtles in the median from Griffin Street to Escambia Drive will be removed and replaced by a lowergrowing shrub to give an unobstructed view of the college.
County councilman Quay Little agreed to use his gravel funds as the county’s matching portion of the enhancement grant.
