Deadline to apply for emergency food and shelter funds extended

2010-03-12 / Local News

Cherokee County has been chosen to receive $61,877 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.

Agencies interested in applying for the funds must contact R. Dewitt Clyde, 864-489-1472 or 864-839-7397 for an application. The deadline for applications has been extended to Friday, March 19, 2010.

A Local Board of county officials, agencies in Cherokee County and interested parties will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies receiving the funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

The Cherokee County Local Board has distributed funds previously to Peachcenter Ministries, Cherokee County Children’s Home, the Salvation Army, Iron City Ministries, Help for the Homeless, and the Gaffney Soup Kitchen.
