Craig, who won the state championship in the 200 meters in 2009, finished first in the 100 and 200 meter events Tuesday in a tri-meet with Byrnes and Spartanburg.

The Indians beat the Rebels but fell to the Vikings.

“We had a great showing,” Gaffney boys’ track coach James Davis said. “A lot of the young guys stepped up.”

Marquis Jackson is one of the newcomers to watch, according to Davis.

Jackson combined with Craig, Marquis Chappell and DeEdward Burris to finish first in the 4x100 relay with a time of :42.7. The ninth-grader also was part of the winning 4X400 relay with Craig, Chris Guyton and Deon Cunningham.

Cunningham teamed with Austin Steagall, Chris Guyton and Calin Shumacher to finish first in the 4X800 relay.

Steagall also had a big meet, capturing first in the one and 2- mile races.

In the field events, Snoop Byers finished second in the triple jump.

The Gaffney High girls were beaten by Spartanburg and Byrnes, but Lelia O’Fare was a bright spot, winning the 100 meters in 12.3. She also was a member of the winning 4X100 relay team of Tymichia McGill, Patricia Sullivan and Gigi Chamberlain.

In the field events, Lacey Gardner took first in the shot.

The Gaffney High track team will host York on Tuesday. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
