A catcher prepares to receive a pitch during a 10-and-under softball tournament at the youth sports complex in February. One day, Shane Wallace envisions a bustling Cherokee County Youth Sports Complex on the weekends.

For now, he’ll settle for a lone weekend, featuring a softball fastpitch tournament for girls 10 and under.

The tournament was held on Saturday, Feb. 27, and attracted teams from Charlotte, Greenville, Travelers Rest and Pauline.

The tournament was a fundraiser for the team coached by Wallace.

There was no charge at the gate or a registration fee for the teams. Wallace’s team, 3rd Degree, did keep the concession revenues.

“It was a very, very successful day,” Wallace said. “We probably raised about $1,000 during the six-hour tournament.

Wallace said he’d like to host more tournaments at the complex, which he claims would keep the cash registers ringing for the businesses near the Hyatt Street facility.

“Weekend tournaments would bring a trememdous amount of revenue into the community,” Wallace said.

Wallace points out that stores across town like SageSport would benefit from the weekend tournaments at the sports complex.

“A parent of a team needed some sliding pants, so she got them at SageSport,” he said.
