Gaffney golf team wins match with interim coach
The Gaffney High golf team lost its coach on Tuesday, but didn’t lose its tri-match with rivals Boiling Springs and Spartanburg later in the day.
The Indians shot a 150, 10 strokes better than secondplace Spartanburg. Boiling Springs was third with a 170.
Gaffney’s Phillip Rogers was the medalist with a 4- under 32 at Cherokee National. Teammate Trey Taylor had a 36, while E.J. Blanton shot a 40 and Chevy Hartzog shot a 42 for the Indians.
Gaffney played its match without head coach Todd Coggins. It was unclear at presstime whether Coggins was fired or resigned. Gaffney High athletic director Phil Strickland said a statement, if issued, would come from the district’s personnel director.
Gaffney High Assistant Principal Eric Blanton served as the team’s interim coach on Tuesday.
It was the Indians’ second match in 48 hours. On Monday in another tri-match, the Indians shot a 159 to beat Northwestern by three strokes. Fort Mill was third with a 164.
Taylor had the low round with a 36, while Adam Goins and Rogers each shot a 40. Blanton rounded out the scoring with a 43.
