City passes resolution endorsing proposed airport
You can add the Gaffney City Council to the list of organizations that want an airport here.
Responding to a request from Airport Committee Chairman Vic Sarratt, council voted unanimously at its workshop Thursday to create and pass a resolution that endorses the proposed project.
Blacksburg Town Council has already passed a similar resolution.
According to county officials, county staff has begun reviewing the federal government’s guidelines for appraising the parcels needed for the project.
Councilman Bernard Smith then questioned Cherokee County Council’s commitment to the project and suggested Blacksburg and Gaffney lawmakers consider working together to move the project forward.
“I’ve just heard the county isn’t supporting it,” Smith said.
Mayor Henry Jolly said the wisest course of action is to convince the naysayers on county council to support the project.
“Everybody knows where the opposition is coming from,” Jolly said. “We must change their minds.”
Proponents argue that an airport would boost economic development, while opponents claim they need firm financial figures before they can support the project.
