Gaffney councilman Smith latest candidate to enter August races
The seats on local government bodies must be comfortable.
Gaffney City Councilman Bernard Smith is the latest local official to announce plans to run for re-election, filing Friday to defend his position as District 3 representative, according to city clerk LeighAnn Turner.
Smith’s seat is one of three up for election this year on the governing body, along with those of fellow councilmen Thomas Reid (District 2) and Boone Peeler (District 5), both of whom made their candidacy official by filing last week.
Candidates for Gaffney City Council can file at city hall, 201 N. Limestone St. A $750 filing fee is required in addition to a statement of candidacy.
Cherokee County School Board hopeful Michael Nix remains the only non-incumbent to file, doing so hours after the two-week filing period began May 28. He will challenge incumbent trustee Mike Ellis, who represents District 1.
Lindley Auton (District 7), Barry Bailey (District 3) and Amanda Knowles (District 5) also have filed to defend their seats on the school board.
School board candidates may file by appointment at the Cherokee County Election Commission Office, 118 Administrative Drive in Gaffney. There is a $200 filing fee.
Mayor David Hogue, and town councilmen Joe Ross (District 1) and Mike Patterson (District 2) are the sole filers thus far in Blacksburg.
Candidates planning to file for office in Blacksburg can do so at town hall, located at 105 S. Shelby St. The filing fee for the mayor’s race is $150, while it is $100 for the council races.
The filing period for August elections began at noon, Friday, May 28, and extends through noon Friday, June 11. All interested parties should bring their driver’s license, Social Security card and voter registration card when filing.
