AUGUST ELECTIONS

Field set
By JOE L. HUGHES II Ledger Staff Writer joe@gaffneyledger.com

The field is now set for August elections as the filing period for three governing bodies came to a close Friday.

Cornelius Smith was the last person to throw his hat into the ring, filing late Thursday to oppose incumbent Gaffney City Councilman Bernard Smith in District 3.

Bernard Smith will be the only city councilman to be challenged on the August ballot, as Boone Peeler (District 5) and Thomas Reid (District 2) will run unopposed.

Meanwhile, only one school board trustee, Barry Bailey in District 3, will not face opposition in August. His peers on the governing body will not have it as easy, however.

Local residents Alex Copeland and Michael Nix will try to derail Mike Ellis’ attempt at re-election in District 1. Amanda Knowles (District 5) faces challenges from Ron Garner and David Wright.

Dr. Marcia Duncan and Alan McEntire filed late last week to challenge incumbent school board trustee Lindley Auton in District 7.

Blacksburg Mayor David Hogue and town councilman Mike Patterson (District 2) have no opponents while Blacksburg councilman Joe Ross will face a challenge from Suzanne Patterson in District 1.

The elections are scheduled for August 11.
