Tuesday thunderstorms keep fire departments busy
A Tuesday afternoon thunderstorm that tore through parts of Cherokee County brought down numerous trees and power lines, and even sparked several small tree and brush fires.
For a period of time, firefighters in Gaffney, as well as the CKC, Grassy Pond and Cherokee Creek areas were all busy responding to calls, though major damage seemed to be limited.
Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said high winds brought down three power poles on Peoples Creek Road and the state Department of Transportation was called in to shut down the road until Duke Energy could make repairs.
A car on Ramsey Heights, which is in the area of Peoples Creek Road, reportedly was flattened by a fallen tree, according to other firefighters.
Ellis said there were numerous reports of other downed trees and tree limbs in the city.
Grassy Pond Fire Chief Junior Ellis said lightning is believed to have caused a gas line rupture in the area of New Harvest Church of God on Boiling Springs Highway. He also reported a brush fire in his district, though he said the brunt of the storm appeared to have missed that part of the county.
Several trees were reported down in the CKC Fire District.
The storm not only whipped up winds and dumped rain, it also dumped dime-sized hail in part of the region.
