Newly-hired interim Gaffney High football coach Dan Jones will hit the ground running.

Jones and about 25 players will participate in Saturday’s Clemson University 7- on-7 Passing Tournament. The tournament annually attracts a competitive field, Jones said.

Saturday’s tournament is just the start of a busy summer for the Indians in preparation for their opening on Aug. 20, against Boiling Springs.

“I feel like we are a little behind,” Jones said. “We have to get rolling.”

On Tuesday, June 22, the Indians will travel to Laurens and former offensive coordinator Greg Lawson for a passing league matchup and the first of three preseason matchups between the teams.

The teams will meet again on Tuesday, July 6, when the Indians host the Raiders. The passing league will begin at 6 p.m.

The Indians will test their skills against several top schools which are expected to compete at the Rock Hill Bearcat Tournament on Saturday, July 17.

Between passing league dates, the Indians will work out as a team on Tuesdays and Thursdays during June and July.

The schedule really becomes hectic when preseason practice begins on Friday, July 31.

After three workouts in only shorts, helmets and shoulder pads, the Indians will be in full pads on Wednesday, Aug. 4.

Two days later, the Indians will host their first scrimmage against Greer. Typically, the Indians follow up their opening scrimmage with Greer by traveling to Presbyterian College to scrimmage Greenwood.

However, that won’t happen this year since the Eagles and Indians will play during the regular season. Instead, Gaffney will scrimmage at Laurens on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

Jamborees then take center stage as the Indians travel to York High School for the York Shootout on Friday, Aug. 13, and, a day later, participate in the annual Border Showcase.

This year, Shelby will host the showcase. But the opponent, Crest High, will remain the same. PRESEASON
