Gaffney wallops Union

Intentional or not, Post 109 manager Zach Clary summed up his team’s winning formula for the future.

“If our pitching and hitting keeps going, we’ll be okay,” Clary said.

That combination helped the team extend its win streak to six with a 17-1 victory at Union on Friday.

Blacksburg High’s Kaleb Earls pitched seven solid innings, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. He also showed his competitiveness by giving up his only run in a bases-loaded jam.

“He pitched very well,” Clary said. “He pitched like he did against Cherryville (in a win earlier in the season),”

He also got plenty of offensive support. Jared Mills, Bubba Wright, Aaron Everette and Lee Gerwick all had three hits, while Michael Hughey, Jordan Garrett and Ryan Westbrook each had two base hits.

Post 109 tallied twice in the second inning and scored three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to take command.

For good measure, Post 109 struck for seven runs in the sixth to turn the game into a laugher.

Everette got things going with a single before Mills walked and Westbrook delivered an RBI single.

Spencer Epps, Wright and Hughey all followed with run scoring singles. Garrett reached and Bobby Jackson had an RBI.

Post 109 will be logging plenty of miles this week with five away games, including at rival Spartanburg today and Friday.

Westbrook is expected to get the start today at Duncan Field.
