Inman blanks Gaffney
Post 109 shortstop Michael Hughey steps on second base and delivers a strike to first base to complete a doubleplay against Spartanburg on Monday at Duncan Park.
The numbers just don’t seem to add up: 10 hits and zero runs.
Unfortunately for Post 109, the math translated into a 6-0 loss to homestanding Inman on Tuesday.
More importantly, the loss snapped Post 109’s seven-game win streak.
“We just popped out too much,” Post 109 manager Zach Clary said.
Post 109 also made too many errors. Inman took advantage of two first inning, Post 109 fielding blunders, a double and a 2-run blast by Hunter Pruitt to take a 4- 0 lead.
Turns out, that was more than enough runs.
A day earlier, Post 109 starter Ryan Westbrook didn’t have his best stuff but helped his team to an 8-2 win over Spartanburg at Duncan Park. He allowed 10 hits over eight innings.
On Tuesday, Post 109 starter Bobby Jackson was dominant at times, striking out 10 and allowing six hits over seven innings. Three of the runs scored off him were unearned. Jordan Garrett pitched an inning of relief.
On several occasions, Post 109 had runners at second and third but couldn’t score.
Garrett had three hits, while Lee Gerwick, Will Raines and Michael Hughey each had two hits for Post 109, which falls to 7- 3.
In the win over Spartanburg, Gaffney pounded out 18 hits but also left a remarkable 18 runners on base.
Bubba Wright led the way at the plate with a 5 for 6 night, including three doubles and three RBIs.
Lee Gerwick chipped in with four hits, while Spencer Epps had three hits and Bobby Jackson and Michael Hughey each had two for Post 109.
Post 109 had a chance to widen its 1-run lead in earlier innings but waited until the eighth to score four runs to go up 7-2. Jackson’s 2-run double was the key hit in the inning. Gerwick and Jared Mills also added RBIs in the inning.
