Smoking about to get real expensive in New York
Lawmakers in New York are considering raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes to $4.35, up from the previous $2.75. If approved, it would be the nation’s highest cigarette tax.
The total average cost for a pack of cigarettes statewide would rise to about $9.40.
The current tax on a pack of cigarettes in New York is $2.75, making it the fifth highest in the nation. That doesn’t include the $1.01 federal per-pack tax. A few local governments also add their own tax. New York City, for example, tacks on another $1.50 per pack.
Here are the highest and lowest per-pack state taxes in the country, according to the American Cancer Society:
Highest:
Rhode Island: $3.46
Washington: $3.03 Connecticut, Hawaii: $3
Lowest:
Missouri: 17 cents
Virginia: 30 cents
Louisiana: 36 cents South Carolina: 7 cents,
will rise to 57 cents
