So much for batting practice.
Water on the field prevented Post 109 batters from getting their pregame swings in, but it didn’t stop them from pounding out a 7-2 win over homestanding Union on Wednesday.
“We planned on taking batting practice but we got our bats going and played well,” Post 109 manager Zach Clary said.
Ryan Westbrook was the hitting star with three hits, including a double. Jordan Garrett added two hits for Post 109.
Spencer Epps had a solid outing on the mound, allowing six hits and striking out 10 in eight innings.
Epps gave up a solo shot in the first and a run in the seventh.
“He pitched really well,” Clary said.
Garrett scored Post 109’s first run after reaching on a two-out single, stealing second, moving to third on Bobby Jackson’s single and coming home on a throwing error.
Post 109 went ahead 3-1 in the fifth when Will Raines, making his second straight start behind the plate, singled. He moved to second on an error and scored on Jared Mill’s fielder’s choice. Westbrook doubled home the second run of the inning.
Post 109 added another run in the seventh on Mills’ two-out walk and an error.
After Raines’ groundout brought home another run in the eighth, Westbrook tripled home a run and Epps brought home Westbrook with a sacrifice fly.
Post 109 will travel to Spartanburg today.
