A company that describes itself as the country’s leading metal finisher has acquired locally owned Dragon Plating & Anodizing Inc. in Gaffney.

The acquisition marks Pioneer’s sixth location and will be known as Pioneer’s Carolinas Division, according to published reports.

When contacted Friday, plant manager Jeff Sperber said his company’s plans is to expand the operation.

He then said further details would come from the company’s marketing director.

The marketing director, though, didn’t immediately return a phone message.

A business journal quoted Pioneer CEO Mike Pyle as saying, “We’re thrilled about the acquisition of Dragon — it fits our growth strategy and customer-focused outlook. The new Carolinas Division extends Pioneer’s reach into new markets and we’re confident that Dragon’s customers will respond favorably to our expanded services, enhanced transportation and dedication to quality.”

The facility will continue to offer anodizing and conversion coatings. Additional services including electroless nickel will be added, the journal article stated.

Pioneer Metal Finishing operates plants in Green Bay and Oshkosh, Wis.; Monroe and Minneapolis, Minn.; and Portland, Ore.

Pioneer’s technologies reach into many industries including aerospace, medical, defense, automotive and transportation.

Cherokee County Development Board Director Jim Cook said Friday he was aware of the acquisition but was uncertain on the plant’s employment figures.
