York pounds out easy win over juniors

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor gaffneyledger.com

The Post 109 American Legion junior team didn’t get a win on Monday, but may have gotten something out of the defeat nonetheless - motivation.

York scored early and often in taking a convincing 16-4 victory over visiting Post 109. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings on the mercy rule.

The embarrassing loss should still be fresh in the Post 109 players’ minds when the teams face each other in the playoff’s opening round next week.

Colby Hill lasted just 2 1/3 innings for Post 109 before being replaced by Will Byars and Grayson Goforth.

“They just hit the ball,” Post 109 manager Aaron Epps said. “We had our opportunities but didn’t score. We just couldn’t get the big hit.”

Jake Arthur and Goforth were the bright spots offensively, with two hits each.

Post 109, which falls to 9-4, will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader Thursday at league-leading Lancaster.

Epps said it’s important for the team to play well heading into the playoffs.

“We need to play well,” he said.
