Rev. Sanders improving after undergoing surgery
REV. DR. J.W. SANDERS SR.
Each new day provides reason for another testimony.
This sentiment could not be more true for the family of longtime Bethel Baptist Church Pastor Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr., who has been hospitalized several weeks while recovering from surgery to ease discomfort caused by a piece of metal found lodged in his intestinal tract.
“We have truly seen God move through my father’s sickness,” said the pastor’s son Dr. J.W. Sanders Jr. “It truly is a testimony to how good our God is.”
Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. was admitted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on June 1 after complaining of pain in his abdomen. Doctors located a small piece of metal inside the 80-year old’s intestinal tract that seemed to be the cause of the discomfort.
“Honestly, the thought began as though it was simply some sort of blockage causing the problem,” Dr. J.W. Sanders Jr. said. “But what we found was the pain was caused by a small piece of metal, which doctors promptly removed.”
Shortly after surgery to remove the metal, the local minister began to experience respiratory issues which complicated his recovery.
However, with every passing day family members receive reports that the pastor’s condition is improving, a steady, gradual process, said Dr. J.W. Sanders Jr.
“While the respiratory problems caused a little bit of worry, my father has steadily improved since,” Dr. J.W. Sanders Jr. said.
Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. marked his 61st year as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in April. He has also served as pastor of Island Creek Baptist Church since 1972.
Well known by church and community members alike, the longtime minister and his family have been pleasantly surprised by the numerous get-well wishes and prayers since he fell ill last month.
“My goodness, the support from an enormous amount of people both locally and other parts of the country has been tremendous; all of the churches have been so wonderful,” Dr. J.W. Sanders Jr. said. “We could not be more appreciative for all their concern during his time of illness. All we can ask is that you continue to pray for him, sending your love and support.”
