40th annual S.C. Genealogical Society Workshop set for July 9-10

COLUMBIA – The 40th annual South Carolina Genealogical Society Annual Workshop will be held Friday, July 9, and Saturday, July 10, at the S.C. State Archives. The workshop offers the opportunity for researchers to spend time with genealogy experts.

Periods of time will available to do research at the S.C. State Archives. The workshop will begin at 8:45 a.m. July 9 with registration. From 9-11 a.m., two tours of the archives will be conducted by Steve Tuttle.

Genealogical seminars both days will address a variety of topics including: genealogy software programs; dueling in South Carolina; research at the University of Virginia; how to get started; establishing paternity using indirect evidence; using probate and equity records in tracing African-American slave ancestry; not just names, dates and places; how does social networking help genealogists; Richard Kemp and the Magical Mystery Tour; researching your criminal ancestors; Ask Granny, a genealogical outreach program; intermediate genealogy; national cemeteries and genealogy; Sherman's March Through Lexington County; Bloody Bill Cunningham and the Cloud's Creek Massacre; using land records as a resource in genealogical research; and exploring the migration of Virginia Methodists into North Carolina and South Carolina after the Revolution.

There will be a speakers' reception July 9, giving those attending an opportunity to meet and talk with the workshop's speakers. Light refreshments are included.

A catered lunch for $10.50 will be served July 10. Lunch includes a buffet of barbecue, fried chicken and ham plus vegetables, drinks and dessert.
