earn the league crown. Instead, the Gaffney-based American Legion team pounded Greer 18-2 on Tuesday night before clinching the title 12-3 on Wednesday.

Bobby Jackson hit two home runs as the Post 109 offense capitalized on eight errors by Greer to score nine runs over the last three innings.

Post 109 pitcher Ryan Westbrook and Greer’s Caleb Baxter were locked in a pitcher’s duel through five innings. Both starting pitchers allowed just one earned run.

Post 109 (12-4) scored nine runs over the final two innings to turn a close game into a rout.

The game was tied at 3 when Jackson started the sixth inning by hitting his second home run of the night. Post 109 scored four runs in the inning and took advantage of several errors by Greer to add five more runs in the eighth inning.

Eight of the nine Post 109 starters had hits against Greer. The one starter who didn’t get a hit still drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Post 109 manager Zach Clary always felt the team would have a successful season even as it started the summer with three straight losses. The game against Greer featured the explosive offense and solid pitching which helped Post 109 finish the season by winning 10 of its 11 final games.

“This was a pretty good win (against Greer). We controlled our own destiny. We had a rough start to the season. Once we started hitting, we won seven games in a row. We got good pitching and were able to come back from behind to become league champions.”

Post 109 will open the state playoffs Monday at home against Richland in a best of five series. The teams will alternate home and away contests with Post 109 at Commissioners Field on Wednesday and Friday, if necessary.
