Five different teams from Gaffney High went a combined 34-2 in scrimmages over the 3-day camp against North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia competition. James Island and Dorman posted the only wins in games against varsity level players.

Gaffney head basketball coach Mark Huff took 44 players, ranging from rising eighth grade to twelfth grade to gain experience and develop their basketball skills in the scrimmages. The Indians have traveled in previous summers to camps at Winthrop and Lander.

“This is the first time we have gone to Presbyterian. It was a good camp,” Huff said. “Everybody got to play a lot and get game experience.”

There were 86 teams from different age groups involved in the Presbyterian basketball camp. The players were grouped into five teams and played an average of seven games in a predetermined schedule.

Huff views the summer as an opportunity for his players to get better by playing games and developing the skills against other teams. By this measure, the Gaffney basketball coach felt good about how the camp went.

“We saw a lot of improvement. Our guys gave good effort and got some game experience,” Huff said. “In the summer, the games don’t count. We are just trying to get a little better every day.”

Gaffney High basketball players will have two weeks off before hosting a one day shootout on Friday, July 16. Players from Mauldin, Southside and Byrnes will join Gaffney for the shootout.
