A 34-year-old Spartanburg man charged with stealing a City of Gaffney police cruiser and leading police on a chase that ended in a wreck with an innocent bystander has been charged with felony driving under the influence.

Keith Anthony Johnson, of Weeping Oak Drive, Spartanburg, was brought back to Cherokee County on Thursday afternoon following his release from a Spartanburg hospital and was served with numerous arrest warrants in connection with the June 23 incident in Gaffney.

The City of Gaffney charged Johnson with providing false information to police, failure to stop for a blue light, resisting arrest, possession of stolen goods, possession of a prescription medication and grand larceny for the theft of a 2009 Dodge Charger police cruiser.

Trooper Billy Elder of the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed Friday the Highway Patrol, which investigated the wreck of the police cruiser, filed its own charge of felony driving under the influence.

According to the Cherokee County Detention Center, Johnson was being held Sunday in lieu of a total $254,750 bond. His bond on the felony DUI charge alone was set at $90,000 by Cherokee County Magistrate Mike Clary, while bond on all other charges was set by a Gaffney Municipal Court judge.

All charges stem from an early morning incident during which Johnson, who allegedly initially used someone else’s identification card, was arrested at a public safety checkpoint at West Floyd Baker Boulevard and Beltline Road at 2:12 a.m.

Police said Johnson was cuffed from behind and placed in the back of a police cruiser and that the arresting officer then went back to secure Johnson’s vehicle and a passenger in that vehicle.

Johnson somehow got out of the back seat of the cruiser, hopped in the driver’s seat and sped away. One officer received a minor ankle injury while attempting to stop Johnson, according to a report at the city police department.

A chase then ensued through several city streets until Johnson made his way onto Highway 18/North Limestone Street. Police said Johnson ran off the road several times, striking a pole and a curb, causing one or more tires on the police cruiser to deflate. Police said Johnson then traveled into the oncoming lane and into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Police said he attempted to swerve and lost control, spinning around and striking the oncoming vehicle.

Both vehicles came to a rest near the Burns auto dealership. Johnson was ejected from the police cruiser and both he and a 62-year-old Gaffney woman, who was driving the oncoming car, were sent for medical treatment.

Numerous police officials investigated the incident, including the City of Gaffney’s internal affairs department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-discipline Accident Investigation Team.

There’s been no word yet from the city police force whether any policy changes are being made as a result of the incident.
