CHAPS selling engraved bricks to help raise funds for museum projects

Already a venue preserving history for future generations, the opportunity remains for the names of local residents and their loved ones to join the many exhibits and relics at the Cherokee County History and Arts Museum.

In an effort to raise funds to pay for renovations to the county museum and surrounding property, the Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPS) is holding “One Step at a Time” — a project in which the nonprofit group sells bricks which will be placed at various points on the grounds.

The fundraiser, which began several years ago, is nearing completion of its first phase in which a number of engraved bricks will be used to surround a circular area in which a garden will be built, said Jane Waters of the Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society.

“A beautiful garden has been planned for the campus for several years,” Waters said. “The only thing we are waiting on is to have enough bricks to complete the job.”

She said there is also hope the organization could begin work on a separate walkway by the end of the summer. Other planned locations for the bricks include museum entrances as well as fountain and sculpture patios.

Termed as a “permanent gift,” Waters said the engraved bricks are perfect for any holiday, whether it be Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or the birthday of a loved one.

“It’s a nice way to remember those who have made an impact on your life,” Waters said. “You can honor grandchildren, grandparents, U.S. Army buddies, anyone. It’s a great way to say you mean so much to me, here is something to remember me by.”

The engraved bricks are $50 apiece. A total of 84 characters can be placed on a single brick.

All purchases are taxdeductible. For more information, call (864) 489-3988, or visit CHAPS online at www.cherokeecountyhistory.org
