The South Carolina Highway Patrol didn’t get its wish — a July 4th holiday without a single roadway death statewide.

At the very least, however, none of the 70 accidents that occurred within the coverage area of Troop 4, which includes Cherokee County, were fatal.

According to Trooper Billy Elder of the Highway Patrol, preliminary reports from the four posts in Troop 4 showed no roadway deaths between July 2 and July 5. The same reports, though, showed troopers across the region were extremely busy.

Troopers in Post A, who patrol Cherokee and Union counties, issued 531 tickets during the holiday and 330 warnings.

Elder had said before the holiday that troopers would be out in full force and would be keeping watch for seat belt violations, speeding and drunk driving as a way to cut down on traffic fatalities. Of the tickets Post A troopers issued, 243 were for failure to wear a seat belt and eight people were arrested for driving under the influence.

A total of 15 wrecks were investigated in Cherokee and Union counties during the holiday period.

Elder said local troopers teamed up with both the Department of Natural Resources, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Gaffney Police Department during the holiday weekend on various safety initiatives.

Ticket and arrest data from those agencies wasn’t immediately available.

There were four roadway deaths reported in South Carolina between July 2 and July 5. They occurred in Sumter, Swansea, Aiken and Summerville.

Though dry conditions and fireworks can be a bad combination, local firefighters reported very few problems on their end.

“This was probably one of the quieter ones we had in a while,” Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said.

He said his firefighters were called out for several grass fires, likely caused by fireworks, but he said there were no significant problems reported.

At least some fireworks damage was reported to Gaffney Police, though.

Around 9 p.m. July 4, someone shot a firework at a vehicle in the area of Granite Drive and Annette Street, causing damage to the right front fender and windshield of a 2007 Ford Five Hundred car, according to a city police report.

Damage was estimated at $2,500.

A review of Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office incident reports from the holiday weekend showed no fireworks-related arrests or damage.
