Two people were arrested on drug charges following an early morning traffic stop on West Carlisle Street, according to a police report and warrants filed by the Gaffney Police Department.

James Paul Linder, 45, of Goldmine Road, was charged in arrest warrants with trafficking ice, crank or crack, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

A second person, Claudete Elaine Byers, 39, of Sarratt Street, was charged in warrants with trafficking ice, crank or crack, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

According to a police report, the charges stem from an early July 4 traffic stop of a van that allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign on West Carlisle Street. While speaking with Linder, who was behind the wheel, police alleged they observed a plastic bag sticking out of a cigarette pack beside the passenger seat in the vehicle.

When Linder was asked to step out of the vehicle, police said they then observed a digital scale in the door panel.

Byers allegedly gave the officer a folded napkin that contained a crack pipe.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police said they seized a cigarette pack from between the seats that contained a plastic bag with a white, rock-like substance and a plastic bag containing a green, plantlike material.

In a separate cigarette pack found under the side of the passenger seat, police said they found two more plastic bags containing a white, powder-like substance.

Linder allegedly told police the two bags containing the powder-like substance were his but denied ownership of anything else.

Police seized $392 in cash from Linder, according to the report.

Det. Philip Wilkie filed the charges against Linder and Byers.
