Humphries' condition was not immediately available, but the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. One person said Humphries was able to walk out of his office following the incident.
Ben Clary, Cherokee County interim administrator, received notice of the shooting on county property from Cherokee County E-911 and immediately went to the scene.
Stressing that he had no direct knowledge of what happened, Clary said he was informed Humphries was unloading a pistol when it accidentally discharged. The bullet reportedly struck Humphries in the hand and then went into his leg.
Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner, Captain of Detectives Chris Skinner, Det. Tommy Kennedy and at least four uniformed city police officers all converged on the scene within minutes. Turner could not be reached for immediate comment about what police determined.
Humphries was taken directly to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
There was a pool of blood on the carpet next to his desk.
The Peachtree Centre's primary use is as an elderly care facility but several county and court offices, including the Office of Veteran Affairs, are located inside the facility.
Clary said no one besides Humphries was hurt, though he said the other workers inside the Veterans Affairs  Office were "shaken up."
More information will be made available online and in print as it becomes available.
