Authorities trying to determine what started Jet Cleaners fire
Investigators spent all day Friday trying to determine the cause and origin of an early morning blaze that gutted a dry cleaning business on Wilkinsville Highway but no rulings have been made yet.
Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said investigators still have some follow-up interviews to conduct but noted, “There’s nothing at the scene to indicate the fire is suspicious.”
A passer-by called Cherokee County E-9-1- 1 at about 4:20 a.m. Friday and reported heavy smoke and flames venting through the roof of Jet Cleaners, 220 Wilkinsville Highway, a report that was quickly confirmed upon the arrival of Gaffney Police Sgt. J.K. Kennington.
Ellis said responding firefighters quickly launched a defensive attack on the fire from the exterior of the building. There was no one inside and Kennington wrote in a report that he learned the business had been closed at least one week prior to the fire. Kennington added that the building had been posted closed for remodeling.
Ellis confirmed there was no clothing stored in the building, so there were no losses of customers’ clothing.
Fire completely gutted the building, however, and Ellis said it was a total loss.
Because the fire broke out at a commercial building, a fire investigator from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was called to the scene.
Ellis, the ATF agent, and members of the Cherokee County Fire Investigation Team spent several hours sifting through the rubble on Friday in an attempt to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Investigators worked past 5 p.m. Friday and Ellis said more work still has to be done.
