Post 109, Easley expected to put on offensive show
Post 109 pitcher Ryan Westbrook will get the ball for today's game with Easley.
Post 109 manager Zach Clary doesn’t know much about second-round playoff foe Easley. But he does know that his team can’t take the opponent lightly.
“They are a pretty good team,” the first-year manager said. “They made it to the second round of the playoffs.”
Just like Post 109, Easley needed all five games to do it.
Propelled by a six-run second inning, Easley Post 52 earned a 13-4 win against Clover in the deciding game of the American Legion bestof 5 first-round series last Friday.
Expect plenty of offense in the series that begins today at Commissioners Field.
Easley outscored Clover 62-53 in their five-game slugfest, while Post 109 kept the scorekeeper busy as well, scoring a total of 44 runs against Richland.
Most of those runs, however; came in the familiar surroundings of Commissioners Field. Post 109 scored a scant seven runs in games three and four at Richland.
Hoping to re-ignite the offense for the decisive game 5 at Commissioners Field, Clary moved cleanup hitter Bubba Wright down in the order and moved Jordan Garrett into Wright’s spot. The result was a double-digit run explosion in a 14-2 series-ending win over Richland.
Garrett continued to swing a hot bat with a couple of triples. Wright, seeing better pitches, responded with a big three-run homer.
“We had two bad games but we hit the ball like we should (on Friday),” Clary said.
Post 109 has thrived on the long ball in the postseason. Bobby Jackson has belted three homers, including a grand slam. Shortstop Michael Hughey hit two in game one.
But Clary realizes no matter how productive the offense is, pitching is normally the decisive factor in a series. Ryan Westbrook, the opening series’ game two winner, will start today’s game for Post 109.
“We just want to continue what we’ve been doing, relying on pitching and defense,” Clary said.
