VA Office reopens day after shooting
Cherokee County Veterans Affairs Officer Todd Humphries was discharged from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center early Tuesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after he was rushed for treatment of accidental gunshot wounds he suffered inside his office Monday.
While Humphries did not return a telephone message Tuesday, City of Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner was able to confirm Humphries suffered injuries to his hand and leg.
Humphries was handling a .38-caliber revolver inside his office, which is located on the ground floor of the countyowned Peachtree Centre nursing facility, when the gun fired.
“He thought it was unloaded,” the chief said. “Was it smart? No. Was it an accident? Yes.”
Several bullets from the gun were in Humphries’ desk, but one remained in the chamber. The accidental discharge first struck Humphries in the hand before traveling into his leg. Humphries, who was able to walk out of his office under his own power, was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
A hospital spokesman confirmed he was discharged at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The shooting incident prompted a considerable police response, with Turner, Captain of Detectives Chris Skinner, crime scene Det. Tommy Kennedy, and multiple uniformed officers converging on the scene.
Ben Clary, interim county administrator for Cherokee County, also raced there after receiving notice of the shooting on county property from Cherokee County E-911.
No one else was hurt, Clary confirmed, though he said Veterans Affairs office workers understandably were “shaken up.”
Cindy Matthews, administrator of Peachtree Centre, wasn’t in the building when the shooting occurred but said she received no reports of any problems on the nursing care side of the building.
“I don’t even think the receptionist heard it and she’s no more than 25 to 30 feet away,” Matthews said.
While Matthews could offer no commentary about what is and isn’t allowed at the Veterans Affairs office, she confirmed that employees of the nursing facility are not allowed to bring any types of weapons to work.
Turner confirmed Humphries had a permit for the weapon.
The Veterans Affairs office closed for business following the shooting but was reopened Tuesday.
