Baseball is often a game of redemption where goats can turn into heroes in a matter of minutes.

Post 109 third baseman Bobby Jackson experienced the highs and lows of this baseball maxim in the ninth inning of his team’s 8-7 playoff win Monday at Commissioner’s Field. His throwing error on a sacrifice bunt helped Easley take a two run lead in the final inning of the opening game in Post 109’s second round American Legion Post 109 playoff series.

Jackson did what Post 109 players have done all summer. He erased the play from his memory and hit a walkoff double with two outs to give his team a comeback victory. Ryan Westbrook and Spencer Epps homered Tuesday night in a wild 15-10 win at Alice Park in Easley.

Easley hit a grand slam home run off Post 109 pitcher Bubba Wright to take a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning. But Post 109 scored seven runs over the next two innings and led the rest of the game.

The victory enabled Post 109 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five playoff series. The winning team advances to the state tournament next week in Columbia.

Jared Mills and Lee Gerwick had three hits to pace Post 109 offensively. Will Raines and Wright both had two hits.

Despite giving up all ten runs, Wright struck out 11 Easley batters in a complete game performance.

“Bubba didn’t want to come out of the game. He battled pitched his best late in the game,” Post 109 manager Zach Clary said. “I just hope we have a different ending than last week and can win the series tomorrow night.”

Jackson is the probable starter for game 3, but injured his thumb in Tuesday’s game against Easley. Epps will start Wednesday’s game if Jackson is unable to pitch.

Prior to Wednesday’s home game, Post 109 plans to honor players and coaches on the Gaffney and Blacksburg 12- year-old All-Star teams for their performance in the state tournament in Aiken. Gaffney defeated Blacksburg to become the Cal Ripken 12- year-old state champions. They will travel to Lake Land, Fla. on July 28 to play in the Southeast Regional Championship.
