Speedway to host free fan appreciation night

STAFF REPORTS

It’s often said that the best things in life are free – and this Saturday Night July 17, in Gaffney, the famed Cherokee Speedway will open up the Grandstands for its first ever Free Fan Appreciation Night.

The speedway plans to have T-shirts and other souvenirs to toss out to the fans as well as food specials, events for the children and fun family entertainment all evening long.

Track owner and promoter Lennie Buff and his crew have been working the race track all week getting ready for two big shows over the next three days. Cherokee Speedway will host the $3,500 to win Ray Cook Southern Nationals Super Late Model tour this Thursday Night and then it’s big free Fan Appreciation Show Saturday Night.

“You know, we have the best race fans in the Carolinas and my folks and I wanted to show them how much we appreciate their business this season and over the years. It’s still tough times out there for everyone. We’ve never done something like this – where we let every person in the grandstands for free - and it makes me happy just thinking that some race fans and families who can’t afford to come out can now enjoy a night at the races on us,” Buff said. “I do not know if anyone has ever done anything like this before, and I certainly want to thank City Chevrolet and Lee Whitesides for helping making this possible.”

Headlining the Free Fan Appreciation Night will be the City Chevrolet Crate Late Models.

They will qualify, run heat races and have a feature race to complete the evening.

Gaffney’s Anthony Sanders has won the last two events at the speedway and will have to contend with 14 year-old Zach Mitchell, Adam Yarbrough and many other area stars in hopes to get his third win in a row.

Also, on the card will be the new Crate Sportsman class running at Cherokee Speedway for only the second time Windslow Ave. • Gaffney, SC this year.

Last month’s first visit saw an impressive list of 16 drivers enter the event.

Whiteside’s Trucking is sponsoring the fan favorite and always exciting Limited Sportsman Division, and the Young Gun Division will round out the list of classes for this free event.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing action to begin promptly at 8 p.m. Grandstand Admission is free to everyone. Cherokee Speedway is located conveniently off I-85 exit 96 in Gaffney, SC.
