While many companies have put the skids on big-dollar projects, a Concord, N.C., motorsports development company is still racing toward its goal of breaking ground on its Cherokee County project next year.

The project, known as Racers Paradise, will be built on a 1,700-acre site near Hwy. 105 and Lowry’s Road.

2Driven co-owner Matt Mullins said Friday that he and business partner Bill Conger remain busy seeking investors.

“Nothing has changed,” Mullins said. “We are still working hard. We have a lot of stuff going on. It’s still our goal to (move dirt) in 2011 and get things going so that we can open for business in 2012.”

Mullins said he hopes to have something to announce within a month.

Mullins successfully obtained a noise ordinance exemption from Cherokee County Council in April.

In exchange for the exemption, the company pledged to complete the entire proposed $25 million project, which includes two world-class road courses, a skid pad and training areas, motocross and ATV trails, cart trails, a drag strip and a nature park.

Mullins had said the exemption was needed to secure investors.

Upon completion of the race track facility, Mullins hopes to attract three national events, including an AMA motorcycle race, a Daytona prototype race and an off-course road motorcycle race. Each event would attract between 20,000 and 40,000 fans, according to Mullins, who would pay for the $25 million facility by selling memberships to its “Drivers’ Club,” which would grant virtually unlimited access to every area of the facility.

The project could bring as many as 60 jobs to the county.
