Fowler said Wednesday that the migrant worker who drowned July 9 in a swimming pool at the Homestead Lodge is believed to be a native of Guatemala. The man apparently came to Gaffney in late June on a bus with other migrant farm workers after he was picked up while walking on an interstate between Florida and Georgia.

The man had been working at a tomato farm on Champion Ferry Road in the Cherokee Creek area.

He died July 9 at about 5:25 p.m. in the motel’s pool. He wasn’t a registered guest there, however, and Fowler previously said the man appeared to be going from room to room, staying with other workers.

The man had no documentation on him or among his belongings.

His death has been ruled an accident.

Fowler said he has been working with the United States Homeland Security Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Greenville in trying to determine the man’s identity through fingerprints.

“So far, we have not been able to find a match but our efforts are continuing daily. I am also working with a representative of the Guatemalan Council,” Fowler said.

The man is described as 5-feet, 1-inch tall, weighing between 130 and 140 pounds. He had blue eyes and black curly hair.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call the coroner at (864) 487- 6225 or call 9-1-1.
