The Berries, composed of Newberry College faculty, alumni and a current student, will provide the music at a Concert in the Park show in Newberry on Friday, July 30. NEWBERRY – The Berries, “Newberry College’s original faculty rock ‘n’ surf band,” will rock Memorial Park at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 30, as part of the summer’s Concert in the Park series showcasing local entertainers. The concert series is sponsored by the Newberry Opera House and is free to the public.

Members of The Berries include four Newberry College faculty members (Dr. Warren Moore, Dr. Barry McGinnis, Doug Cook, Kyle Smyly and Larry Ellis), three Newberry College alumni (Andrew Skaggs, Evan Connelly and Jane Ellis), and a current student (Joseph Schroer), who collectively draw their musical inspiration from the surfmusic bands, garage bands and one-hit wonders who rocked American AM-radio airwaves before the British Invasion.

The group has been described by one reviewer as “five teachers, four kids, three chords, and an attitude.” Dr. Warren Moore, the band’s drummer, said, “We want people to hear the lost music of the 1960s, even if it’s our own cheesy version.”

Every show is a beach party for The Berries, so bring blankets, lawn chairs, cool drinks and the entire family to Memorial Park for a celebration of the goodtime rock ‘n’ roll sounds of summer.
