Cherokee Athletics eye state championship
Veteran manager Terry Belue is no stranger to all-star tournaments.
So, when he says he likes his team, he means it.
This time, Belue will be leading the Cherokee Athletics age 15-and-under all stars into state tournament play at Anderson’s Memorial Stadium.
The roster is made up of players from Gaffney, Blacksburg and Pacolet.
The tournament opened Thursday with West Ashley facing the local all-stars. The game began at 8 p.m., and the results weren’t available at presstime.
The winner will meet Lower state champion Goose Creek at 6 p.m. today.
The winner of the double-elimination tournament will advance to the Southeast Regional.
Belue said the strength of the team is pitching and defense.
Blacksburg product Evan McCurry was expected to pitch Thursday.
McCurry relies on pinpoint control rather than a blazing fastball, Belue said.
Either, Marcus Elmore, another Blacksburg product, or Jaylen Miller will start game two.
How far Cherokee Athletics will advance in the tournament will be determined by their bats.
“I just hope our bats come alive,” Belue said.
Miller, Will Byars and Austin Goode have been the team’s most consistent batters in practice.
The team is solid defensively with Jeremy Holden behind the plate, Miller at first base, Byars at second base, Elmore at shortstop, Goode at third base and Josh Tate, Nick Hames and Jacob Roper in the outfield.
Nolan Cobb, Tristan Whelchel and Bradley White will likely play reserve roles.
The tournament championship game is slated for July 25.
