County residents baked under scorching temperatures this weekend, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory.

Temperatures averaged in the upper 90s throughout the weekend in Cherokee County and reached a high of 100 degrees Sunday afternoon.

While no records were broken, the National Weather Service said the heat index reached 105 to 109 degrees for several hours.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity led the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for the area on Saturday and Sunday.

Cherokee County Sheriffelect Steve Mueller joined several pastors for a “Rock- A-Thon” fundraiser Saturday morning at the Peachtree Centre nursing home. The pastors sat in rocking chairs on the porch to escape the heat while raising money in a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Disease research.

This was one of the few outdoor activities held Saturday in Cherokee County.

Many county residents opted to stay inside and out of the heat.

An Upstate Carolina Medical Center nursing supervisor contacted Sunday afternoon was unaware of any people treated for heat-related illnesses during the weekend. But Cherokee County Emergency Preparedness Director Rick Peterson said there were a couple emergency medical calls for respiratory and allergy problems that could have been related to the heat.

“Heat illnesses are always possible when the weather is this hot,” Peterson said. “The best thing to do is stay inside in a cool place, drink plenty of fluids, and check up on elderly residents and kids to make sure they are alright.”

AccuWeather has included thunderstorms in their weather forecast in Gaffney for Monday through Wednesday, which could provide some temporary relief from the heat.
