On average, working men and women here bring home less income than friends and family members who live in bordering counties.
In a South Carolina Association of Counties report, Cherokee County ranked lowest in per capita personal income based on 2007 data in comparison to bordering counties and had the second-lowest per capita personal income of counties with a population between 50,001 and 100,000.
A Cherokee County resident earned an average income of $24,794 in 2007, trailing Union County, which had a per capita personal income of $26,230, the report showed.
Neighboring York County residents are the wealthiest, on average, with an per capita personal income of $32,627. Spartanburg County residents take home an annual salary of just under $29,000.
In the Upstate, Greenville County residents earn the highest average incomes at $35,076, about $6,000 more than Anderson County residents, who earn a per capital income of $29,084.
In counties with a population between 50,001 and 100,000, Cherokee County trailed only Lancaster County, which has a per capita income of $22,076. Georgetown County residents enjoyed the highest per capita income in the population category at $34,694.
Statewide, Beaufort County residents had the most financial assets, with a per capita income of $45,427. On the other end of the spectrum, Marlboro County had the lowest per capita income at $20,384.
