Cameron Brooks Cameron Brooks A familiar face will be returning to the Gaffney High varsity football coaching staff.

Gaffney native Cameron Brooks, who served on the staffs of former coaches Joe Montgomery and Phil Strickland, will coach the team’s wide receivers, according to head coach Dan Jones.

Jones said a teaching slot opened up when Gaffney High boys varsity basketball coach and physical education teacher Mark Huff was named the school’s interim athletic director. Brooks’ contract, though, has yet to be officially approved by the school board.

The team’s current wide receivers coach, Tom Owens, is expected to retire at the end of this year, according to Jones.

Brooks last coached at Gaffney during the 2006 season.

Known for his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game, Brooks was hired at Byrnes for the 2007 season before joining the James Island staff for the 2008 season.

But Brooks never made it a secret that his wish was to return to the Upstate to coach. That wish was granted last season when he joined Freddie Brown’s staff at Spartanburg High School as a defensive backs coach.

Brooks was a standout wide receiver for the Gaffney High Indians before continuing his gridiron success at Gardner-Webb University.
