State champs thumped in regional opener
Manager Bob Humphries didn’t recognize the team that took the field Thursday morning for the start of the Cal Ripken League Southeast Regionals for ages 12 and under.
It’s probably because the team did something unusual - lose.
South Augusta, the Virginia state champs, scored three times in the first inning and added three more in the third en route to a 10-3 win over Gaffney.
“We just didn’t hit the ball like we normally do,” Humphries said.
The local all-stars will now play an elimination game on Saturday against a yet to be determined opponent.
Humphries said his team appeared to be discouraged after South Augusta jumped on top in the first inning.
“We kind of dropped our heads a little bit after that,” he said.
Landon Batchler started for Gaffney and went five innings before giving way to Dillon Gibson.
South Augusta put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning.
Gaffney, on the other hand, couldn’t muster more than a single run in an inning.
Landon Batchler had the RBI in the second, while Damian Eubanks brought home a run with a groundout in the third.
Gibson had the team’s only other RBI in the fifth inning.
Humphries said Matthew Overton will get the start on Saturday.
Lakeland, Fla., is hosting the tournament.
