CHARLES BYERS

DARLINGTON – Charles Aubrey Byers, 73, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, in a local hospital after a long illness.

Born July 25, 1937, in Grover, N.C., he was the eldest son of the late Aubrey Gilmore Byers and the late Ruth Malone Byers. He attended Grover High School and Limestone College, then spent four years in radar maintenance for the United States Air Force. He received an Associate Degree from Florence- Darlington Technical College and subsequently became the head of the Aircraft Maintenance Department. He was a Designated Maintenance Examiner for the FAA. His students affectionately called him “Mr. B.” He was very proud of his students and enjoyed hearing from them through the years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly Turner. Charles and Beverly celebrated 50 years of marriage on Feb. 5, 2010. Charles touched many lives with his beautiful tenor voice. At the young age of 12, he sang in his parents’ gospel quartet. He performed solos from “The Messiah” many times, including performances at Limestone College and Clemson University. He sang for many weddings, church services and special events. Both music majors in college, Charles and Beverly sang for lay renewals and recorded three albums of Christian music.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Byers is survived by four children, Charles Aubrey “Chet” (Nancy) Byers II of Acworth, Ga., Robyn B. Hoffmeyer of Florence, Michael Darrin (Andrea) Byers of Moreland, Ga., and Karyn B. (Patrick) Gabbey of Beaufort; 14 grandchildren, Chris (Allison) Byers of Asheville, N.C., Taylor Dee Byers of Landrum, Bryson Beyers-Cutrer of Waco, Texas, Nicholas (Sabrina) Kilmer of San Antonio, Texas, Linda (David) Barnes of Valdosta, Ga., Stacy Hoffmeyer and Brandon Hoffmeyer of Florence, Brittany Byers of Atlanta, Ga. and Brandi Byers of Columbia, Amanda E. (David) Patch of Camp Lejuene, N.C., Ryan Eagle of Moreland, Ga., Brooke Gabbey, Beth Gabbey and Joshua Gabbey of Beaufort; three great-grandchildren: Abram Barnes and Alivia Barnes of Valdosta, Ga., and Hailey Byers of Asheville, N.C; two brothers, Kenneth (Ann) Byers of Gaffney and Gary (Martha) Byers of Grover, N.C.; a brother-in-law Charles “Chuck” (Jutta) Turner of Greeley, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Marilyn T. (Bob) Sieli of Salem, Mo.; and a nephew, Kurt Salaman of Portland, Ore.

Services were held Sunday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mike Mills. Music was provided by Ann Miles and burial was in Florence Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Pallbearers were Chris Byers, Brandon Hoffmeyer, Ryan Eagle, Patrick Gabbey, Barry Cook and Ruel Thain.

Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 7, from 5-7 p.m. at Belk Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of Charles and Beverly, 205 Pinewood Drive, Darlington.

BARBARA CAMP

Barbara Faye Surratt Camp, 70, of 1514 Old Caroleen Road, Forest City, N.C., answered the Master’s call on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at Rutherford Hospital.

A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, cousin and in-law, Mrs. Camp was affectionately called “Bobby.” Bobby was a native of Cleveland County and daughter of the late Rev. L.C. and Mary Alice Surratt and was married to L.C. Camp Sr. At an early age, she was converted and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She joined Greater Buck Shoals Baptist Church and later joined Piney Grove Missionary Church of Cowpens, where she had been a faithful member for the past 10 years. She was also retired from Cone Mills Cliffside Plant. She loved her family, friends and people in general. She was a mother to numerous children who loved her as their own.

Left to cherish fond and loving memories besides her husband are: four daughters, Rev. Barbara J. Curtis of Chesnee, Mary A. Gregory of Gaffney, Mary V. Rivera of Columbia and Hope L. Seeezy of Spindale, N.C.; three sons, Charles E. Surratt, Thomas C. Camp, both of Forest City, and Lester C. Camp Jr. of Henrietta, N.C.; two brothers, Sylvester Surratt of Chesnee, Ramsey Surratt of Sandy Mush; eight sisters, Annie Craford, Debra McEntire, both of Sandy Mush, Emma Eatmen, Joyce Davis, both of Maryland, Ora Burris of Gaffney, Avery Haywood of Forest City, Jessie Mae Camp of Trenton, N.J., and Jeannie Moore of Shelby; 32 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend their thanks to all who have shown them comfort during the illness and loss of Mrs Camp.

Services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 3 p.m. at Piney Grove Missionary Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Rector. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
