Lovelace Greene Jr.

AIKEN – Mr. Lovelace (LC.) Greene Jr., 79, beloved husband of Colleen Greene and son of the late Lovelace C. Greene Sr. and the late Elizabeth Owens Greene of Gaffney, went home to be with the Lord at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010.

Born May 19, 1931, in Gaffney, he was a long time resident of Aiken.

He proudly served

25 years in

the U.S. Air Force. He was Civil Defense Director for Aiken County for three years and received the Distinguished Service Award for handling the B-52 crash in Aiken County. He served as Aiken County Administrator for five years and was Town Manager of Winnsboro. He was instrumental in bringing Mack Truck Company to Winnsboro. He retired as City Manager of Lexington after 15 years of service. Under his leadership the town grew from 2,700 to well over 16,000 residents and he was instrumental in the construction of the Lexington Municipal Complex. After retirement, he served as a consultant to the Town of New Ellenton.

Mr. Greene was an avid sports fan; he loved the Gamecocks and the Atlanta Braves. He was a fast pitch softball pitcher for the Air Force. He was named Boss of the Year in 1978 by the United States Jaycees. He received numerous Air Force medals and awards and was honored with The Order of the Silver Crescent by the state of South Carolina.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Geraldine (Ronnie) Foreman of Lyman, John (Debbie) Greene of Myrtle Beach, Marcia (John) Caldwell of Summerville, Lynne (Terre) Bohman of Mount Pleasant, Kim (John) Beeland of Aiken and Cindy (Tim) Jones of Raleigh, N.C. He was grandfather to 15 and great-grandfather to 19. He is also survived by a sister, Carolyn (Freddie) Spencer of Gaffney and a brother, Gary (Sandra) Greene of Boiling Springs, S.C.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Betty Parker; his brothers, J. M. Greene and Charles Greene; and his grandchildren, Tracy Jones and Zack Foreman.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Millbrook Baptist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force active duty will be in Bethany Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 9, from 6-8 p.m at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave, SW, Aiken.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the Fifth Floor Main nurses and staff of Aiken Regional Medical Center, Carriage Hills Rehab Center and United Hospice for the loving care provided to Mr. Greene during his illness.
