Observations
BURRIS BETTER - After running track last spring, quarterback DeEdward Burris may be even more elusive than last season. Burris always had the ability to make defenders miss but now he's a step faster and can outrun the swiftest of safeties.
JUSTIFYING JUSTIN - Although it's asking a lot for a sophomore to start at free safety, Justin Thompson appears to be that rare type of athlete who could be a game changer. Granted, he'll make some mistakes because of inexperience but he'll more than make up for it with some big plays.
RUN FOR THE ROSES - Yes, the Indians have a potent passing game but the team will go as far as its running game will take it. Last season, the running game mainly consisted of scrambles by Burris. To truly be an effective offense, running backs C.J. Miller and Robert Grandy must become legitimate running threats.
JUST FOR KICKS - The Indians are searching for a replacement for longtime punter/placekicker Josh Harris. There's a reason why coaches preach the importance of the kicking game.
CENTER STAGE - After several seasons of operating exclusively from the shotgun, the Indians will diversify its offense — and make it more physical — by putting Burris under center some and using the tight end as an Hback. Offensive coordinator Donnie Littlejohn also has installed a trap game that looks promising.
