L.T. Hartzog

L.T. Hartzog, 90, of 118 Hillside Drive, peacefully slipped from this life into the next on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010.

Born in Allendale, he was the devoted husband to the late Will Sossamon Hartzog and son of the late Laurie Thomas Hartzog Sr. and Sara Harley Hartzog.

Mr. Hartzog graduated from Gaffney High School and went on to attend Wofford College.

He served his

country in the

U.S. Air Corp and was stationed in Foggia, Italy during World War II. He navigated a B-24 Bomber and flew in 39 combat missions.

Upon returning from service, he married his sweetheart, Will, and they founded Hartzog Jewelers, which still operates today under their traditional business values.

Mr. Hartzog was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served as Deacon. He was a member of the Gaffney Jaycees, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Cherokee County Literacy Association. In 2009, he was inducted into the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame.

Mr. Hartzog was an avid golfer and could be found most Wednesday afternoons on the course. In 1967, he won the club championship at Gaffney Country Club. He also enjoyed tennis and was known for his talent on the courts.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, his compassion, his keen sense of humor and his service to this great country.

He is survived by his four sons, Tommy and wife, Julie, of Lake Lure, N.C., Bobby and wife, Lizabeth, of Mills River, N.C., Rhett and wife, Cindy, of Acworth, Ga., and Charles and wife, Glenda, of Gaffney; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hartzog Hamrick and Hanson Hartzog Lineberger, and a brother, William R. “Billy” Hartzog.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 11, from 6-8 p.m. at the residence, 118 Hillside Drive.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. in Oakland Cemetery with full military honors. Dr. M.B. Morrow Jr. will officiate.
